Wizard's Staff of Light

Any wizard worth his or her salt has got to have a staff. While the appearances can vary greatly, they should all have at least one thing in common. Light. We've all seen it. The staff held high in the dark, a blazing beacon of power... Some of you (you know who you are) would love to have one. But it was either too expensive or too hard to make or you thought batteries weren't authentic...

Well... Call it a whim, but I've decided to share the secret of making your own wizard's staff. No batteries required and just about anybody can do it. It really works, and it's not magic. But it will seem like it...

How to make a Staff of Light

1) Get yourself a big stick. Most people prefer around five and a half feet long. It also has to be around two inches thick.

2) Buy a kinetic energy flashlight. These require no batteries. Simply shaking it gives it a charge. I did a search for "battery free LED flashlight" and found one right away HERE

3) Hollow out the end of the stick to fit the flashlight.

4) Make a hole in the side of the staff for the flashlight button.

5) Insert flashlight, lining up button and hole.

6) Glue crystal or gem stone (or whatever you want) to the flashlight button, making sure not to get glue on the sides of the button hole. This hides the button and helps keep the flashlight in line.

7) Top it. You can glue a crystal ball over the end, thread the end and screw on a nice pre-made piece that allows light through, etc...

8) Carve and decorate staff to suit you.

You now have a Staff of Light that doesn't need batteries and charges just from the motion of using it as a walking stick. It's that simple. If you are really clever, you'll figure out how to bypass the button and install a voice activated switch... (yes... wizard light at the command of your voice).

What's interesting to me is what somebody will think of one of these in the future. It's kind of fun to imagine that if The Tolkien Scenario came true, these would seem like real magic. So get tinkering, my future wizards.
